Drummer Eddie Cleland

Just a quick note to all my friends/followers of The Tikiyaki Orchestra ....and everyone else for that matter. I'd love it if you could send out some good vibes, prayers, positive thoughts etc for our drummer "Steady Eddie" Cleland, as he goes in for a removal of a second brain tumor today (7/3/12). He has THE Premier brain surgeon/specialist Dr. Black performing the surgery, who did his first surgery, which was far more serious than this one. Oddly enough, when we first contacted him to play drums for Tikiyaki, he told us he was unable to even walk, let alone play drums due to his first tumor and surgery. A year later he was in the band. I call that a miracle.

To anyone who knows Eddie, you know what a positive, upbeat and just all around great guy he is, as well as is one helluva drummer ! So, even tho' his doctors are confident, it's still brain surgery, so, I'm asking for good vibes for Steady Eddie, so that all goes well, and we have the pleasure of having him perform with us at Tiki Oasis in August, and all gigs in the future.
Godspeed and good luck Eddie Cleland !!!

UPDATE 7/4/12:
Eddie came through the surgery with flying colors and was texting all of us within 24 hours! Way to go Steady Eddie!!!

Tikiyaki Orchestra heard on Documentary Soundtrack

The Tikiyaki Orchestra's tunes were an integral part of the soundtrack to a documentary about vintage airline travel. The Travel Channel's show "Ultimate Travel" featured a 1 hour episode called "Plane Sexy" which featured interviews with former stewardesses and rare vintage footage of the golden age of air travel. The soundtrack featured several songs from the Tikiayki Orchestra.

Tikiyaki Orchestra Returns to The Hukilau in 2011
The Tiki Orchestra returns to Hukilau, where, on only our third show, at Hukilau 2008, we had such a wonderful time, complimented by the oh-so-exotic Marina The Fire Eating Mermaid. Three years later, we're back!

If you have never been to Hukilau, or are not familiar with the event, its is a must for any Tiki enthusiast. The weekend event, located in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, features 3 days of tropical vending, entertainment and symposiums presented by authors, artists, urban archeologists, and authorities. But perhaps the most amazing part of the weekend is a night at the Mai-Kai. The Mai-Kai is possibly THE most amazing example of Tiki temples of America's mid-century past. Walking into the Mai-Kai is like walking into a time capsule made out of a Polynesian fantasy. Practically untouched since its opening 55 years ago, the restaurant seats over 600 people, but remains intimate in feel and features priceless Leeteg velvet paintings, carvings, decor, a full tropical garden with waterfall and a real shrunken head. If you want to taste the Tiki past, enjoy one of the multitude of impeccable exotic cocktails served in the Molokai bar by beautiful exotic hostesses. You won't believe your eyes or taste buds.

We will be performing as part of the Friday night main event. Then, after you recovered from your hangover on Saturday Night, join us for an ultra intimate performance in the Mai-Kai restaurant for happy hour as we do a special mellow cocktail set.

The Hukilau event:
June 9 - 11, 2011
Ft. Lauderdale, FL

Tikiyaki Orchestra Hukilau performance schedule:
• Friday evening at the Bahia Mar as part of the Hukilau Main Event
• Saturday early evening at the Mai-Kai restaurant for Happy Hour before dinner seating

Get your tickets NOW! They really do sell out fast. Visit the Official Hukilau website

Come to Don's and help us help Marie King!
One of the most exciting things about the Ohana is the "Aloha Spirit." There is an easy going feeling that certainly echoes the sprit of the Islands. And when a member of the group is faced with adversity, people rally to help all they can.

Not more than a few weeks ago, Marie King (bar manager at Don The Beachcomber and long time member of the Tiki community) was involved in a near fatal car accident on the I-10 freeway. Marie is doing much better now and is expected to make a full recovery. But she's still got a long way to go. That is why the Tiki community has banded together once again to do what they can to help out.

Join the Tikiyaki Orchestra along with The Smokin' Menehunes, Slackstone, The Elminators, Glasgow Tiki Shakers, Outerwave and the Boardwalkers as they create one of the funnest events of the spring: MariePalooza. And all the money from ticket and merchandise sales goes to help Marie King make a speedy recovery.

Tikiyaki Orchestra Lights Up The Night In Tucson
The Kon Tiki Restaurant in Tucson, Arizona is the setting for spectacular once-in-a-lifetime event. The Tikiyaki Orchestra headlines an evening of music and spectacle, along with Thee Swank Bastards, Flam Chen & the Disillusionists.

The Kon Tiki is one of the last remaining, operational tiki temples from American's mid-century tiki past. The interior is almost completely original from the opening day--including, what some tiki historians call, the largest collection of Mila Guanko tikis, still in situ, in the world. The large, spectacular sign in front of the iconic Tucson, AZ restaurant features two large tiki torches that once lit up the desert night with real gas flames. Over the years, the torches fell into disrepair. The Kon Tiki has spared no expense to refurbish the tiki torches and for the first time in more than 25 years, the tiki torches are going to be relit.

The evening festivities will include a relighting ceremony by the renown acrobatic performance team Flam Chen, followed by a concert of great exotica and lounge by The Tikiyaki Orchestra. The evening will conclude with music by Thee Swank Bastards, all against the backdrop of the beautiful Kon Tiki.

This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime event!
**There will also be a special, limited edition tiki mug to commemorate the relighting. Stay tuned for pictures and ordering information.

Tikiyaki Orchestra
Mug #1

We still have a few left, but once they're gone...they're gone. This is the Tikiyaki Orchestra's first mug designed by Squid, in the standard edition Borneo Brown glaze. Get yours now at our STORE

The Tikiyaki Orchestra is a musical experience unlike any other today. Utilizing a unique combination of sounds...smooth, mellow vibraphone, twanging, reverb-drenched surf guitar, pulsating theater organ, lilting Hawaiian steel guitar, bongos, congas, and an arsenal of exotic perucssion from around the world, all set against the sounds of the ocean and jungle. The Tikiayki Orchestra transports the audience to a place and time when Cantonese food was "exotic cuisine" and people escaped the mundane with the aid of strong, sweet rum-based cocktails served in tiki mugs with little colorful umbrellas.. i.e. Waikiki in 1955.

Evoking the sprit of past masters such as Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman and Les Baxter, the Tikiyaki Orchestra performs original material from their CD "StereoExotique', written by award winning composer and band leader Jim Bacchi, as well as classic of Exotica, traditional Hawaiian, lounge, surf, spy jazz and cocktail genres.

If you are ready, let Tikiyaki Orchestra light the Tiki torches and take you on an exotic journey you will never forget.
